Stage 18: VILLAFRANCA DEL BIERZO to O CEBREIRO (18.67 miles)

Today's hike was dedicated to Ray and Martha Harding; to Ray for his love (I will miss him so much) and to Martha who loves to paint landscapes and is particularly fond of the color green.

Not only was it long but was a constant and gradual uphill hike for about 14 miles. At Las Herrerías we started a steep climb that lasted nearly 4 miles with an altitude increase of 1968.5 feet. Every time we thought we were at top there was another climb. Sometimes the path was rocky, sometimes wet and muddy, sometime perfectly graveled or paved (these were rare). However, I will say that the views were well worth the climb to O Cebreiro. Here is a progression of our experience:

That is Villafranca de Bierzo

The climb begins

We left Castilla y León and have entered Galicia

We made it to O Cebreiro. This is the view from the town.
