BURGOS

Burgos was a wonderful stop along the way. The city is one of our favorites. I has a beautiful cathedral...

This is the main altar of the Cathedral. Buried right in front at the level of the nave is the legendary Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar also known as El Cid.

After some cleaning the original colors on this door were uncovered.

I love this altar. It represents the genealogy of the Savior. In the middle you see Joseph and Mary. Just below them is Jesse and from his side grows the genealogical tree.

The Cathedral is also home to a daVinci of Mary Magdalene

This is one of Jannette's favorite scenes of Christ in Gethsemane. To the bottom left is Peter with the sheath holding his sword. Above him is an angel coming to succor the Savior with a chalice and cross in his hands the foretell his coming death. In the top right you see Judas leading the soldiers who will take Christ.

Burgos is filled with walkways along the river that are so beautiful and peaceful though we are in the middle of a bustling city.

And, yes. The trees here are grafted together so that when they are in full leaf it creates an arcade.

Of course there are the stranger things also! This the scary ice cream dude. He was frightening but the ice cream was very tasty!

The coolest thing happened in the evening. It was a celebration called Noche Blanca (White Nights). During this celebration there are performances in the streets, the museums are open to the public for free and there is general wandering about the city until about 3 am. We were wowed by a multimedia presentation that was projected onto the face of the Cathedral. The narrative talked about the Cathedrals in Europe that were built around the same time in the 13th century and the similarity in their architectural design. It was a colorful affair and well worth the wait in line. Here are some images:

The talked about Notre Dame and its unfortunate destruction. Here are the flames rising.

This shows Vatican rising.

The commentator was Papamoscas, the face of the Cathedrals animated clock.

Next, Santo Domingo de Silos...
